13 Club

Along with Lush and Propaganda, Club 13 caters to the partying student market up in the Wu. If you go to the West Gate of Tsing Hua University and head towards Zhongguancun market up Chengfu Lu, then Club 13 is on the left hand side of the road. To call it a club is a bit of a stretch of the imagination. It’s more a live music venue than a club. There are dirty carpets on the floor and graffiti over the walls. The chairs are covered in plastic decorated with cigarette burns. It does seem to have an underground vibe to it, though. It’s more punk, rock and blues than hip hop, pop and R&B. It seems to take the term grunge to heart.

 
Daguanlou cinema

Daguanlou on Dashilan is China’s oldest cinema, and well worth a visit.

Though films were first shown in Shanghai in 1896, Daguanlou became the first cinema in 1902 when forward-thinking entrepreneur and filmmaker Ren Qingtai bought the building, having purchased a French-made motion picture camera in Japan.
