The Banana brand seems to be rampaging through Gongti like an old world god-king, building a Chivas-soaked empire on top of the ashes of its vanquished conquests.
First Babyface fell, becoming the frankly ridiculous sounding Banana Babyface, a clear lesson that if you’re going to throw random English words together make sure they don’t conjure up creepy Daliesque images of infant fruit hybrids. The newest club to be swallowed whole by the monkey-food juggernaut is Babi Club, which opened with a whimper and went out of business with an undignified silence. LA Club is the Banana brand’s bid to go fully hip hop, which generally means getting a load of sparkly shiny things on the wall and breaking out the Soulja Boy records. They know their target audience, and LA Club doesn’t disappoint. The smaller than average club has most of its area occupied byspace-age booths, which seem to have come straight out of camp sci-fi film Barbarella. The sofas are covered with silver cushions; the walls and pillars are decorated in mock-reptilian plastic; worst (or, depending on how you look at it, best) of all are the creepy white porcelain stallion heads that overlook random parts of the club. It’s like the place was designed by someone in the ’60s trying to predict how interior design would look in the 21st century. The sound system is loud and crisp, so it’s a shame that it’ll only ever be used to play Black Eyed Peas songs. The dancefloor has a sunken section in it and railings for people to lean on (all that booty-shaking can be a tiring business). Drinks hover around the 40-50RMB mark depending on how elaborate your cocktail is going to be. It’s hard to recommend LA Club any more or any less than places such as Mix, and if you’re fond of that sort of clubbing this is somewhere you’ll want to check out. Try not to laugh at the leopard print hats they make the waiters wear – the poor guys have a hard time. Do, however, feel free to titter at LA Club’s tagline: ‘LA girls. LA music.
