New Chinese Dictionary to Debut in September

The newest edition of Ci Hai, an authoritative large-scale comprehensive dictionary of the Chinese language, will make its debut in September.

The 2009 edition of Ci Hai, which is revised every ten years, is composed of five volumes and has 130,000 articles, including more than ten thousand new articles, according to a report in the Changjiang Daily on Saturday.

The new dictionary includes some newly popular entries, such as the Shen-zhou series spaceflight missions, 3G, high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, the Bird's Nest (National Stadium), the Water Cube (National Aquatics Center) and so on. However, it has yet to include some popular terms such as Super Girls or Happy Girls, one of the most popular entertainment shows during recent years in China.

Peng Weiguo, president of Shanghai Lexicographic Publishing House, publisher of the new Ci Hai, told the newspaper that starting from November 2005, the fifth revision requires that the new entries in Ci Hai are full of information, stable, and time-tested.
